2 Big Questions

“At some point, nonprofit leaders have to ask themselves if the mission is worth the work, the fear, and the risk. If it's not, then what are you doing? If it is, then what are you waiting for?”

I wrote that in a LinkedIn comment a while ago, in a conversation about board members that were declining to fundraise for their organization.

I talk a lot about the role of board members in fundraising – often, there’s a lack of clarity about what we’re talking about when we talk about fundraising that drives a lot of board member discomfort.

But I want to zoom out for a moment.

Because fundraising can be risky. And it can be a lot of work. And it sometimes can be scary.

The question that all nonprofit leaders need to ask themselves is this: is the mission worth it?

Is the work of the nonprofit worth building? Is it worth investing in? Does it deserve to be seen and supported by your community?

I think it’s a question that nonprofit leaders have to answer.

Some leaders are more like caretakers – prioritizing tradition and comfort over vision and innovation.

But other leaders …

They know their mission is worth it. And they are willing to learn, risk, and grow to do more for and with the communities they serve.

Not surprisingly, these are the types of leaders I love to work with. Leaders who want to align and accelerate their fundraising to raise more money and engage more donors to support their missions.

If you are ready to do more with your fundraising plans, then it’s time to talk.
