Curiosity > Expertise

Not too long ago, I worked with the Gig Harbor Harbor Waterfront Alliance here in Washington. I helped them build their first fundraising plan, provided some training for the board members, and worked with their executive director on some fundraising mindsets.

Here’s what she wrote to me following our work together:

"I’ve known a local family who lives in the Waterfront District for a few years … I reached out and asked them to coffee a few weeks back to chat about what’s important to them about the Waterfront since they live here. I wasn’t aware they have a charitable foundation out of Greys Harbor. Anyway, today I just got back from vacation and there was a $5,000 check waiting for me from their charitable foundation! I wouldn’t have set up that coffee date if we hadn’t had your training so THANK YOU!"

Three important takeaways from this story:

1. You don’t need a research dossier before you call that donor and invite them to meet.

2. Curiosity beats expertise. The meeting wasn’t a chance for the ED to sing the praises of her organization – but to ask about the donor’s connection to the community. (More about this in this week’s video)

3. Results like this are just the beginning.

I’ve helped clients build million-dollar fundraising programs and I can do it for you, too. If you’re ready to get better fundraising results and more engaged donors, then it’s time to get started. I’m ready – are you?
