Beyond the Buzzwords: Culture of Philanthropy

Ah, "culture of philanthropy."

It's a well-used and poorly understood phrase. It can be used to describe board generosity, donor retention, or staff engagement. And it's something that can apply to any nonprofit organization -- from a local, grassroots team to a national company.

Beyond the buzzword, what are we actually talking about?

At its core, a genuine culture of philanthropy rests on three beliefs:

  • that philanthropy is good

  • that it works

  • that it’s worth the investment.

An organization with a strong culture of philanthropy knows that philanthropy is a good thing. It's not something to be shy or embarrassed about. An organization with this belief understands that engaging the community—inviting them to volunteer and donate—truly elevates its mission.

These organizations also know that philanthropy works. That when call on people’s generosity, they respond in ways that might surprise you. That's not to say that it's a magic trick (far from it), but that reminding people of their generous nature, showing them the impact of their giving, and painting a picture of your community's future can yield fantastic results.

Lastly, an organization with a culture of philanthropy knows that it is an investment. The programs, systems, and staff needed aren't free - and relationships with funders, donors, and volunteers take time. Nurturing relationships and investing in your team is what makes philanthropy happen.

Of course, the good news is that a culture of philanthropy can be developed and grown. Are you ready?
