Board Roles that Actually Work for Your Events

You've heard the stories: event plans driven not by strategy, but by a board member's preference. Committee meetings devoted to in-depth discussions about table linens. New event concepts introduced the night before showtime.
But you've probably also heard the stories of meaningful, thoughtful events with clear follow up.
And those stories often happen because board members are working with staff to put on an effective fundraiser.
Here are three roles board members can play to make you event into something that furthers your mission, not just something that is fun to attend.
Before the Event: A clear strategy can help board members make thoughtful invites to their network. This isn't just forwarding an email - but making direct asks to people who might enjoy the event and connect with the mission.
During the Event: For a small donor appreciation reception, I had board members volunteer to find and thank a small number of guests. Nothing too fancy - just saying hi to three or four guests each - and thanking them for being a donor. A simple gesture that left the donors feeling seen, and gave the board members a chance to meet more members of the community.
After the Event: Never underestimate the power of a post-event thank you call. It's not only a way to express your gratitude, but call can capitalize on the emotion and good will generated at the event -- and set the stage for further engagement.
