It's Not You, It's Me

The hardest part of my yoga class this morning was not the poses, and it wasn't even the act of getting up and out the door for a 6am class.

It was comparison.

It was seeing other students - who are built different than me, have different levels of experience, and different levels of fitness and flexibility - hit poses and flows that I struggled with.

The competition was, of course, in my head. The skill set of my fellow classmates was something totally out of my control. But if I'm not focused in class, it can get to me.

I bet there's another nonprofit in your city that you feel a level of competition with. Maybe they have a bigger staff, or a more successful fundraising campaign. Maybe you feel like they are easily achieving things that you regularly struggle with.

Being mindful of your work, and not focusing on your perceived competitors -- is key.

It's hard to do, since competition is baked into so many business ideas - and since comparison seems to be a major underlying theme to LinkedIn posts.

So, take a breath and pay attention to your practice. How are you are treating your team members and donors? How are you advocating for your cause? How are you evaluating and improving your operations?
