One thing you can always count on in the nonprofit space is a plethora of nonprofit industry reports.
The other thing you can count on is a plethora of thinkers, analysts, and gurus weighing in on said reports.
So, keeping in that proud tradition, here are a few thoughts about the 2025 Giving USA Report!
If you’re not familiar, this report is one of the largest philanthropic reports out there – and the latest edition was recently published. The full report looks at the trends and details behind the $592.5 billion in charitable donations made in 2024.
For my more analytical colleagues, there’s a ton to digest in this report. For those of us with a more practical point of view, it can be a mixed bag.
After all, it’s overwhelming to look at these data and to try to evaluate or adjust your own fundraising to align with what you’ve read.
For me, this report is an annual wake-up call, reminding nonprofits to focus on individuals. Individual giving accounts for 66% of all gifts last year and that number grows when you factor in the portion of foundation gifts that come from family foundations.
Want more evidence?
Donors that give through sustainable giving programs (like monthly giving) have higher retention rates.
More?
Bequests account for 8% of all giving last year (more than corporations) - $46 billion!
Reports like this one offer a fantastic opportunity to sit down with your leadership team and board members to talk about fundraising strategies. I
f you’re waiting for a sign before launching a monthly giving program – or to start talking to your donors about their legacy – consider this report your sign.
If you’re ready to have these conversations – and start raising the funds you need – then let’s talk. I’d love to help you align and accelerate your fundraising efforts!
