Still thinking about your New Year's resolutions? Well, step away from that language learning app, put down the fad diet, and let me give you three resolutions that are perfect for any nonprofit leader!
#1 Focus on generosity, not systems
If 2025 taught us anything, it was that the underpinning systems of philanthropy can be slowed down, stopped, or mangled by bad actors. Generosity, however, is harder to stop. If we mistake one for the other, we run the risk of assuming that donors are failing us. I'd wager that many of your donors are still ready, willing, and able to stand by you and your cause - if you keep inviting them to do so.
#2 Celebrate your victories
It's human nature to focus on the gap, the loss, the failure. But our ability to celebrate our victories and successes (even the small ones) can make all the difference when it comes to our culture and attitude. So celebrate those meetings that get booked, the board member that makes an introduction, the renewed gift from a donor. There is joy in the work that we do, but we sometimes need to give it a little boost.
#3 Keep Learning
It's an old saying, but it still works. What got you here won't necessarily get you to where you need to go next. I'll go a step further and say that the minute you stop learning - about fundraising, your industry, your community -- you start to lose effectiveness. So keep investing in your learning in 2026. Sign up for that webinar (like this one on corporate giving or this one on special events), get involved with a professional association, or start working with a coach (like this one) so you can raise more - and do more - for your mission
Ready for 2026? More importantly. ready to raise more and do more for your mission? Then let's get started!
