Event Purpose > Goals

Stop me if you've heard this one.
You're planning a fundraising event. Maybe it’s a gala, or a breakfast, or a competitive round of Hungry Hungry Hippos.
Your goal for the event is $100,000. Or 10, or 25 or whatever.
But you but that dollar amount on your registration page, you invitation, you social media page.
"Join us to raise $100,000 for XYX."
That's your goal. But is that the goal of the actual event?
If the only goal of your event is to make money, then it raises more questions. Is the golf tournament / luncheon / 5k the best way to make that money? Does that dollar amount reflect the total income or the net income? How are you calculating event expenses like staff time?
None of these questions make a donor feel connected to your mission and cause. I'd also be surprised if these questions inspired a potential guest to attend or participate in the event, either.
So, stop mixing up you goal with your purpose. The goal is internal - net income, number of guests, etc. The purpose is why this event exists.
Put it another way: the purpose is what you will accomplish with the money you raise.
Your purpose ties your event to the cause. And it gives attendees a clear connection between their support and the cause that they care about.
Not sure about your event purpose? Looking for help in convincing your board to let go of the annual Hungry Hungry Hippos tournament? I can help!
