Get Specific With your Fundraising Event

I've been to a lot of fundraising events. Big ones, little ones, strange ones. Galas, golf tournaments, breakfasts, lunches, building rappelling, construction contests, races, walks, concerts, comedy shows, wine tasting, cooking classes … all things, both live and virtual (fundraising in 2021 was hard, folks).
These events ranged from inspiring to insipid. (That might be a little strong, but I love some alliteration). And regardless of venue, budget, or size the events that stuck with me are the ones that were both joyful and specific.
A joyful event is one that celebrates accomplishment while gearing up for the challenges of the future. It's a room full of people connected by their support of the mission. It's something that can be felt.
Not sure if you are planning a joyful event? Take a look at the stories and images you are using to raise funds. Are you focusing on the need and the lack? If so, you're probably not hitting joyful.
A specific event is an event that could not be put on by anyone else. The location, the event activities, even the signage all point to a specific mission and organization. A specific event doesn't make general statements about fundraising or support. It makes a specific ask to support a specific vision.
Here's your test for specifics. Imagine your event. Now imagine another nonprofit's name and logo affixed to your event materials. If it still works, you're probably in the generic category.
I know that joy can be hard to find these days and that our needs are so great that we simply must talk about them.
And I also know that getting specific about your event and your mission takes some thought.
But your organization exists for a reason. And your donors and supporters haven't been picked at random. Creating (or re-creating) an event that reflects your community will help you raise more and do more.
